In the 40 days before Resurrection Sunday/Easter/Pascha known as Lent, we are following the journey of Jesus from Baptism, to Wilderness, to Public Ministry in Luke.

RAISE YOUR VOICE!
Luke 19:28-40 There are silences that can destroy hope and feed oppression yet, at times, silence can be life-giving. Humans have used their voice to crush revolutions or bring a death verdict but we have the same power to use our voice to shout and dance ourselves to life! When hope in Jesus arrives on the scene, he calls and draws us to use our voice for a new vision of what can be. This Palm Sunday, we are called to shout for joy! There is a God who enters our world from the edges, the obscure places, and allowed us to kill him, to set us free from our own death by the power of his word.

The Story The Text
Luke 19:28 After Jesus had said this, he continued on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.  29 Now when he approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples,
30 telling them, “Go to the village ahead of you. When you enter it, you will find a colt tied there that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs it.’” 

• ancient custom of angaria Latin (Grk: ἀγγαρεία)?

32 So those who were sent ahead found it exactly as he had told them.  33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying that colt?”  34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.”  35 Then they brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt, and had Jesus get on it.  36 As he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. 

• BUT none of that explains

37 As he approached the road leading down from the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen:  38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

• This recalls Zech 9:9 and also Isa 1:3, 40:9; and other regal moment of 2 Sam 15:23-32

  • “So what does Messiah mean? For the Israelites, the Messiah referred to this promised king who would defeat evil and restore humanity to the Eden ideal. When Jesus arrived on the scene, a son from the line of David and Judah, he said he came to usher in God’s Kingdom. He was the king the people had been waiting for. But in his mission to destroy human evil, he himself was destroyed—killed on a cross by the very people he came to save.
    
  • Jesus’ death was not the end of the story. Jesus’ death fulfilled the promise that God made all the way back in the garden of Eden. Evil had struck the Messiah's heel, but the Messiah still defeated evil, atoning for the sins of all humanity. When Jesus rose from death, he asserted his ultimate authority over death and evil, dealing the snake a fatal blow.” 
    

39 But some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”  40 He answered, “I tell you, if they keep silent, the very stones will cry out!”

• Jesus says, "Yeah, No". And probably a pun/dad joke on them. The Hebrew for stone 'eben is close to son ben. There were many such puns in Rabbinic literature. This pun takes on more power into chapter 20.
