Gloria Wong is a Christian who has grown up in Vancouver. Over the years, she has thought a lot about Christianity within culture, particularly within Chinese culture. She delights in how God is gracious to allow people of different cultures and languages to understand and receive the good news of the Bible in His time. During her travels in East Asia, she has collected songs from different minority groups and studied how new Christians adapt their native song forms to tell biblical stories and employ their own song forms also for Christian worship.
As part of her work in the Vancouver music community, Wong is a pipa player, music educator, scholar and administrator. She has worked in different roles to promote Chinese instrumental music in Vancouver over the years. Wong has served as the Artistic Director of the British Columbia Youth Chinese Orchestra since 2010. In 2016, she helped to establish the Chinese Music Program at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music and worked to expand their World Music program offerings from 2017-19. She is currently co-director of the UBC Chinese Music Ensemble, as well as the Executive Officer and Director of Education at the BC Chinese Music Association. Wong holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of British Columbia (2010). Her publications include the monograph, Yueqi: Chinese Musical Instruments in Performance (British Columbia Chinese Music Association, 2011), co-authored with Professor Emeritus Alan Thrasher. She also contributed Chinese instrument articles to the second edition of the Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments (Oxford, 2014). |
LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONMUSIC, FAITH, AND CONVERSATION
The message of Jesus and His Kingdom is global. We believe that many cultured churches are both the past, present, and future. In the ancient book of Galatians, the author Paul, challenges the church to be one while including all. At Pilgrim we are leaning into that beautiful vision. We invite you to a special evening of music with a classical Chinese instrumental ensemble and Dr. Gloria Wong. We will be exploring the intersection of faith, culture, and music.
